Another
Fall Regularity Run has come and gone.
If you missed it,
you missed a good one. Perfect weather and probably the best fall
colours we have had in several years provided the perfect
backdrop to this year’s event. The Run always conjures up mixed
feelings, because it is the last car driving event of the year and soon
all the Jaguars will be put into storage for their long winter nap.
The Run started and finished at the Mill Street
Crossing Restaurant and
Pub in Acton. Twenty cars participated and about 50 people
attended, some from as far as Sudbury - now that’s dedication.
Again this year there was a good mixture of old and new Jaguars - four
E-types, XJ6’s, XJ12’s, XJS’, an S-type and the oldest car being Gordon
Gadsby’s Mk1. The roads were the typical twisty, up hill and down
dale roads that bring out the best in the cars. Many of the roads
this year had trees reaching right over the road. Along with the
fall colours, one could easily become engrossed travelling down the
country lanes. The infamous Rattlesnake Point road (aka Appleby
Line) was on the route and is always a hit with the drivers because of
its switchback corner.
Competition was very close with only five points
separating the top
five cars. Five cars had three or less time faults (the
Terbrack’s and the Sherriff’s both had zero time faults) and six cars
had eight or fewer question faults (the Findlay’s had only six question
faults) - very impressive. For the first time in memory, the top
two teams were repeats from last year.
Joe and Pam
Terbrack and their son Drew took top honours. In second place were Dan and
Rita Yachuk, Tayten Yachuk, and Gavin Doherty in their 1996 VDP.
Dan and Rita came down from Sudbury to compete - as the saying goes
“It’s worth the drive to Acton”. In third place were Dale and
Nancy Findlay in their E-type. The Terbrack’s were awarded the
Rampant Crank trophy and all three winning teams got wine glasses
etched with the Association’s logo and a bottle of wine.
While we like to think the questions are easy, some
competitors seem to
think they are diabolical - go figure. At least two competitors
came equipped with dictionaries - one weighing at least 10
pounds. There are always some funny and quite ingenious
answers. Some of those deserve to be shared. Names are not
included to protect the guilty.
To the question “ACHILLES sells what marque?”
(correct answer - Mazda),
one person answered “shoes”. The now infamous ratites reared
their ugly, little heads again. To the question “What ratites are at
Blazing Hill?” (correct answer - Emu), a common answer was
“antiques”. The emus may have been old, but they’re not that
old. To the question “What is “OFFERED FOR SALE”?” (correct
answer - Turtle Creek Farm), one person answered “sex”. We’ll
have none of that in Puslinch Township thank you very much. To
the question
“What animals are on the FOX sign?” (correct answer -
foxes), we had people answering cow, rabbits, and horses.
To the question “Fill in the blank - “Java ____” (correct answer -
Stop), one person answered “Joe”. One team pretty well threw in
the towel, when they wrote on their answer sheet “Sorry about the
questions - But - at least we didn’t get lost this
year!!!”.
A hearty thanks is extended to John Taglione for all his help; to Fred
Hill for making the awards presentations; and to Jeff Booth for getting
the glasses and the wine. It's worth pointing out that this was
the first time that laser-etched OJOA club logo glasses have been
awarded. Again this year the Mill Street
Crossing Restaurant and Pub did an excellent job and even went above
and beyond by putting on a special buffet lunch for our competitors.
Thank you to everyone who attended. We hope to see you all and
more members, at next year’s Run.
The Registration Table is always a fun place and, again, it was run by
Linda Smith, that's the ever-smiling
Michael Woodman sitting across from Linda. John Scopis and Nancy
Findlay (who competed with their respective spouses)
look like they've just registered. Let the fun begin....
