Ontario members earn Slalom and Concours honours

The Ontario Jaguar - OnLine

C o mpetition within JCNA arenas is challenging.  No doubt about that.

But it can have its own rewards.  Satisfying awards. And seven members of the Ontario Jaguar Owners Association are enjoying that satisfaction right now.

The distance between a 1st and a 2nd in Concours competition can be -- and HAS been -- as little as 1/1000th of a point. And the time difference between 1 st and 2nd in Slalom can be as miniscule as 1/000th of a second.

During 2007 a number of OJOA members competed in both Jaguar Slalom and Jaguar Concours d'Elegance in both Canada and the United States.  Most members chose to compete locally only, at the Ontario Concours, held in Oakville, or at the Ontario slalom, held in Brampton. Some members did both.

A very few members did both -- in both countries.

Other members participated in Concours only while some participated in Slalom only.

Regardless of how members chose to enjoy their 2007 Jaguar season, JCNA-level activities always offered the opportunity to spend time with like-minded enthusiasts -- even if the stress of competition did provide omnipresent tension to the day.  In the best of situations this competitive tension led to raucous, friendly banter between competitors, which served to highten everyone's satisfaction levels.

The two forms of JCNA-level competition enjoyed by Ontario members last year couldn't be more different. The Concours saw Jaguars prepared, as much as possible, to just-from-the-factory levels of perfection. The Slalom saw Jaguars put through their acceleration, braking and turning paces in an amazingly challenging Slalom course.

Since these very special cars are known for their "Grace, Pace and Space"  it's worth noting that Concours activities recognized Jaguar's "Grace", Slalom competition recognizes Jaguar's "Pace".  And owners get to enjoy Jaguar's "Space" whenever they driving their elegant Cats.

Each year, Ontario members can be found on the list of year-end winners. This year is no exception -- and with one very worthwhile surprise.

That surprise is that -- for the first time in OJOA history -- and Ontario member has earned top spot in North America is Slalom .

That member is Ross Hamilton, who also happens to be OJOA's Slalom Chairman. Ross not only beat out the reigning champion in  the 6-cylinder E-Type class -- which had been held by North American Slalom chairman and JCNA vice president Steve Weinstein, but Ross bested two dozen other E-Type racers.

It's worth noting that the lovely E-Type that Ross was driving belonged to another OJOA member, Nelson Burkhart, who placed 4th in North American Slalom standings.

Ross' North American time, at 44.668 seconds, bested the 2nd place finisher, from Oregon, by 0.222 second.

Here are the year-end JCNA placings of Ontario members:

The gorgeous 1964 E-Type that Ross Hamilton set the North American standard by for 2007.
This is a double first: OJOA has never held a North American Slalom 1st before!   x
This is also one of only two cars in all of OJOA's approximately 600-car roster that competed
in BOTH Concours d'Elegance and Slalom in TWO countries during 2007.

Two lone Canadians ventured to Tennessee a few years ago to one of Jaguar Clubs of North America’s bi-annual premier events. v During their welcome a pleasant and enthusiastic Sue Hagopian persuaded Nelson Burkhart (inset photo, right)  to enter his Ice Blue 1964 Series I XKE Roadster into the North American Slalom event. Gary, Sue’s husband and Art Dickenson took a keen interest in coaching novice Nelson and that interest continued two years later in the Peach State of Georgia. Their encouragement fuelled a fire for the “Need for Speed.”

Ross Hamilton
(inset photo, left) finished second and Nelson third with intention of sparking the Ontario Jaguar Owners Association to organize an event.

The Clubs first ever Split Second Slalom was born in 2006 and was followed by a successful renamed
Scorched Paw Slalom in 2007. A pack of Scorched Paws invaded Indianapolis taking significant memories and trophies back north. Ross Hamilton was able to finish first in the slalom posting the best ever time in North America.
Congratulations to the Ontario Jaguar members making other noteworthy contributions.
This all evolved from the “Spirit of Jaguar’ and great members willing to share their escalating passion.

While this was the third consecutive year (fourth year overall) that the “S” placed in the top spot in Championship Class in North America, it was the most challenging, competitive year we have experienced to date!

We competed in five shows last year with this particular car, including Dublin, Ohio (a favourite!), Pittsburgh, Cleveland, Cincinnati and the Championship Challenge in Indianapolis.

While we have had a the car for a number of years, purchased from a local Jaguar enthusiast, the preparation for the 2007 season included a number of ambitious improvements – including a new radiator & new back door handles – not to mention addressing some issues relating to brake fluid leaks (now completely under control).

All to say that if we arrived at a venue earlier than 2 a.m. the day of the competition, it was considered a success!

Happy motoring to all OJOA members for 2008!

s "Margaret and I would like to congratulate our fellow club members on their successes and awards.  We understand more than most Jaguar owners, just what it takes to win a Concours, especially when you have to drive hundreds of miles, detail the car and compete against North America's best Jaguars.  We have attended many Concourses over the years (7 last year alone) and have made great friends whilst having a lot of fun.  Will we compete in 2008?  We shall see in the spring time if the "bug" bites once again."

Cheers

Margaret and Graham Stokes

The Andrews' 1994 XJ6 - 99.58500

By Dave and Edna Andrews

As a young fellow, many years ago I was thrilled by the sight of the new XK120 and the subsequent exciting events of the fifties when the C and D types made Jaguar a marque to be reckoned with. Finally, in 2000, Edna and I bought our XJ6 and joined the OJOA .

We have since enjoyed the company of fellow enthusiasts and when we tentatively ventured to enter into the minefield of Concours events and were awarded a 3rd Place the bug had bitten .

While we have from time to time wondered why on earth we do all this cleaning and detailing that bug just keeps on biting. Congratulations to all our awards winners.

(Editor's note: Since that 3rd Place win, the Andrews have gone on to win many 1st Place honours).

OJOA President Fred Hill campaigns his marvelous XJS in both Concours and Slalom .

This car is always a high-scoring Concours competitor.
It's even scored a perfect 100.00 points in Championship competition -- and he runs it in Slaloms!
Fred, if Sir William Lyons was with us today, he'd want to shake your hand!!

Past president Jeff Booth, left, watches his 1997 LWB Vanden Plas get judged
at Monument Circle, Indianapolis, Indiana.

This car actually had a mechanical failure  DURING   the Slalom event at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, between laps 3 and 4. Fortunately, fellow JCNA member (and X300 expert) Mark Stephenson was able to save the day and this Jaguar went on to complete the race date at IMS.

This is the second of only two cars in all of OJOA's approximately 600-car roster that competed
in  BOTH  Concours d'Elegance and Slalom in TWO countries during 2007.
