Our Slalom Chairman Ross Hamilion -- an always creative guy -- changed the name of our
Jaguar racing event to the "Scorched Pay Slalom."
Looking at Steve Sherriff's performance in his supercharged XJ, it's
abundantly clear
that some of our Cat truly do get "scorched paws."
And if you think this is a spectacular display of how to drive your
luxury, performace car,
you should see what happens AFTER Steve's had his morning coffee.......
|

A moment to smile, in the midst of the hubub of preparation and set-up.
From left: OJOA Director Dan Lokun, the irrepressible Steve Sherriff,
Tayten "Mad Max" Yachuk
and OJOA Chief Judge John Taglione.
|
FOLLOW THE LEADER: Slalom Chairman Ross Hamilton, left,
explains some of the course to Ian Law, who set an unofficial OJOA
Slalom record of 40.271 seconds in member Mike Woodman's
Lotus Elise. OJOA prez Jeff Booth, right, tries to stay warm.
|
After you arrive, you gotta go through
this door and get completely registered.....
|

... and in the Registration Office, this is who you meet, Linda Smith,
herself. Not sure why Linda's
wearing that fashionable hat inside......
|
.... hey, even getting registered can have its funny moments. What,
you thought this
was a Concours and you spent the last six days cleaning your Jaguar?????!!!!
|
All competitors had designated parking spots, the Norrises are in No.2.
That's Patricia and Scott Norris, getting the lowdown from Steve Sherriff.
|
OJOA Vice-President Fred Hill goes through one end of the course with his Concours-winning
XJS. Fred drove directrly from the Detroit Jaguar show for
our Sunday racing eventl.
|
The Pontsas check out the action over at the track. You can see an
E-Type and an XJS lining up to
head into the starting gate. The "Japanese Jaguar" in the middle
is entered in the
non-Jaguar "Z Class" of the event.
|
Every car registered for the Slalom must undergo a mechanical/technical inspection before
being released for it's first lap. From left; Rob Lusty, Michael Woodman and
Walter Smith get things going. The owner of this racing-liveried E-Type is Ron Walker,
at the back with the orange cap. Also visible, to the right rear, is George Cox, wearing the grey hat.
|
Headin' to the Slalom. Ron Walker motors on down Hwy. 407 toward Brampton.
The tool highway never looked so good....
|
More tech inspection, this time with Mike Lenard, left, of Cat's Cradle
Jaguar Specialists,
and George Cox
|
This picture had great potential to become a photo caption
contest......
Steve Sherriff took some lucky participants on a ceremonial tour of the Slalom course
before the official start. The car is a 1954 Cadillac 9-passenger limousine.
Lucky passengers had to -- somehow -- try to sip non-alcoholic champagne
in the rear as this magnificent automobile careered around the
track. Very well done, Steve........
|
Does this man look well rested? Well, let's say he was a very, very busy man.
Slalom Chairman Ross Hamilton briefs drivers. That's OJOA's flag in the rear,
with our JCNA / Jaguar Cars flag.
|
If Steve Sherriff couldn't scare the cones with his feats of derring do,smoke and huge Cadillac,
he may just have taken care to run over any cone which offered
particular offence -- but it looked like an accident, really.
Penalty for killing a cone? Two seconds added to your score.
|
Rules and insurance regulations require suitable helmets for all Slalom racers.
The Jaguar logo helps some competitors go faster .... really.
|
There goes novice Slalomeer Scott Norris, heading to the end of the track. OK, what's next???
Is it a 'Figure 8' .... or a 'Lap' .... or an 'Hourglass' ... or maybe
it's time to blast into the 'Braking Box'!
The Slalom course is challenging in the extreme. Drivers do not have time to "think"
about what to do next, you have to just do it right. Everything
happens extremely quickly. By the time you've
thought out something, you're off course -- or you've killed a cone.
|

Nello Aimola, Manager of The Cat's Cradle, Jaguar specialists, puts his XJS through one of the 180s
on the course.
|
Remember Ian Law, from one of the first photos on this page? Here's a
photo of his unofficial time -- the fastest
Slalom time ever for OJOA -- fought and won driving Mike Woodman's
British racing green Lotus Elise.
|
OJOA's newst member, Rob Lusty, puts his late-model supercharged Jaguar through the course.
Note that little grey box on the ground, in from of Rob's XJR. That's part of the laser-triggered
timing equipment that we use in this event. The equipment times to one thousandth of a second.
|
There's Ron Walker again, making the reviled toll road look good.
|
Steve Sherriff. A supercharged Jaguar. Smoke. A dead cone. Enough said.
|
Argh, Skipper, she's going down by the port bow.....
|
Like kids at the CNE Midway ... passengers line up for the next "Sherriff Lap."
|
Mike Lenard, of Cat's Cradle, prepared to do battle with the cones, the clock, himself, and other
in the supercharged Jaguar class.
|
This is the amazing Volvo that OJOA member Ian Law brought to the Slalom.
Do you think he's serious? Darned right, serious also about
having good, safe motoring fun -- which is what OJOA's Slalom is all about.
