Jaguar talks stall

Talks between union bosses and Jaguar Land Rover have stalled after the two parties failed to reach an agreement over workers' pay and conditions, it has emerged.

Informal talks between union leaders and the company had taken place before Christmas following the publication of the firm's strategic review in September.

This week the company sat down with Unite to discuss the review, including proposed changes to pay and pensions.

The salaries and pensions of new starters at the firm had been up for discussion but union bosses and the car manufacturer failed to reach an agreement about proposed changes.

Part of the package tabled by Jaguar Land Rover was to guarantee 8,000 production jobs until 2015.
But the package of proposals was not accepted by the unions. The offer does not currently stand because an agreement was not reached.

It is understood union leaders and bosses at Jaguar Land Rover will return for further talks and industrial action is not imminent.

A spokesman for the company said: "Basically there were a set of proposals that were on the table that the union felt weren't acceptable and this part of the talks came to an end.

"We were in discussions informally with the unions between September and Christmas and we had a more formal sit down this week with the intention of coming to an agreement.

"It went on for several days. It wasn't a half-hearted meeting but at the end of it an agreement wasn't reached."
